This is one of the many temples in Tikal. The stones represent locations for beheading. Although it may not be true, I have my own ideas about sacrifices. Archeologists base what they believe to be true based on their understanding, which as with everyone, is limited to the understanding of the world they live in, and through the eyes of their own culture. I think of the Mayan people as I would any other people. I do not believe they were crazy blood thirsty savages that beheaded people for fun. I believe the Maya did not have the concept of jail. Locking someone in a room for crimes for years on end probably seemed odd and cruel. My guess is these stones were used for, as with all other peoples, as punishment for terrible crimes that could not be paid by sweat or trade.
